Painting and Clean Air

Paintbrush

When you are getting ready to being a painting job, especially one that will be done indoors, there are a number of important details to have covered. Not only will you need to make sure that you are fully stocked with the right equipment, such as brushes, trays, paints and chemicals, but you will have to make sure that the space you are going to work on is a safe place. This includes the most visible issues pertaining to your immediate personal safety, such as having a secure ladder, but also to issues that are not as readily soon. For instance, most people do not realize that a room that is being painted must be properly ventilated not job so the paint can dry faster, but also so that they do not breathe in harmful fumes that can cause a number of unwanted side effects, such as dizziness. Keeping the air clean does not just pertain to the span of days over which the painting job will take place, but also for the future use of the room. Almost any room in the home is susceptible to harmful vapor emissions from a variety of household chemicals that can last for months after their application.

One way to help reduce the harmful emissions that can be left behind by paints is to purchase interior paints that have a low volatile organic compound (VOC) element. Interior paints with a low VOC have a high vapor pressure, but are low in their water solubility. Products such as these are usually odor free, but are not necessarily VOC-free. They simply have a lower volatile organic compound than most other forms of interior paint. The gas emissions that these compounds can release into the air are as much as ten times more potent when release indoors are when release into the open air outside. This is why it is critically important to do your painting job in a room that is well ventilated. Also, because these types of gas toxins will remain in the air for some time to come, its also important to choose paints with the lowest VOC possible, to bring the emissions to the lowest level possible.

Certain types of paint will contain a higher level of harmful gas or toxin emissions than others. For example, a glossy paint has a higher concentration that does a matte paint. Brighter colored paints will have a higher VOC than paints that come in more neutral colors. This is because brighter paints have color elements added to them that contain VOC and increase the overall VOC of the paint itself. After spending time painting a room, it may be best to wait several days before spending time in the room. Wait at least three days before moving back into a room that has just been freshly painted. Because exterior paints usually have a much higher VOC than do indoor paints, never use an exterior paint to cover the walls of a room indoors. When you are done using the paint, throw it away according to safety regulations rather than storing it in or around your home.
